Is het nu echt te veel gevraagd van die journalisten om eens de telefoon vast te pakken en iemand in Liberia op te bellen, om die kant van het verhaal ook eens te horen?

The Liberian government says it has received credible reports backed by written communications that some employees of the WEALA and SALALA Rubber plantations have issued threats that they would attack and eliminate some expatriate workers of the two companies amidst differences over a number of issues.

The pronouncement of the government comes, less than two days after violence erupted at the Liberia Agriculture Company (LAC) between some of the local inhabitants and the management of the company, which resulted to the death of the company’s Plantation Manager, Bruno Michiel.

While the government was mobilizing the security forces to move to the Liberia Agriculture Company (LAC) over the weekend to curb the violence there, it was at the same time dispatching a high-powered security team to Weala and Salala to curb and deal with any incident of violence.

The Law and Order minister also commented on whether the killing of LAC manager Bruno was not a result of the exclusion of the community leaders from the agreement signed with LAC for the US$22 million expansion project. Justice Minister Banks indicated, “The exclusion of the communities is no basis for violence. The judicial system is functioning; courts are opened and any dissatisfied party could take advantage of the courts.”

He however admitted that community people need to be included in the making and signing of agreements that has to do with operations of concessions in their localities. Minister Banks also said the Government was launching an outreach programs for the Liberian communities to educate residents on their involvement in any such development initiatives and agreements and to tell them what to do if they are dissatisfied instead of resorting to violence.

According to [Byron] Tarr, during the late afternoon and early evening of Thursday, November 22, 2007, a gang of men under the command of a Mr. Prince Sarnou, said to be a senior LAC personnel in the corporation’s Plant Protection Department, entered several villages in Gianda Clan, District No. 4.

In Garpue Town, reportedly one of the Twelve Villages from which LAC and officials of the Government of Liberia seek to evict the native people unlawfully to plant rubber trees, the LAC operatives using single barrel guns, shot and wounded Samuel Garpue, a youngster in the town."

Tarr continued that in another town, Kparaduah, another of the Twelve Villages, the marauders entered the village, shooting, and arrested several men, including his brother, George Z. Tarr, dragged the men into their pickups. The whereabouts of the men are unknown.

Early this morning, Friday, November 23, 2007, the gang entered the compound of the Zondo Public School, the only school in the District. According to information provided by telephone from villagers as they fled, the school is being ravaged and all males are being arrested

Tarr asserted that persistent reports during the night and today, Friday, express fears for the lives of those in LAC custody. "The men and boys are being tortured, humiliated and brutalized by LAC security personnel. [FONT=Arial]We have reported these ugly incidents by email to Mr. Allan Doss this morning, the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative

Tarr said in addition the seven persons reportedly charged by the state, only fifteen of the nearly thirty persons randomly arrested from their villages in Gianda have been released. Those released as well as those still in detention, including Mr. Arthur Crusoe, were beaten, brutalized and humiliated.

The pre-trial of seven persons suspected of murdering a Belgian national working for the Liberia Agriculture Company in the eastern County of Grand Bassa was on Thursday postponed after the state informed the court that its prime witness is ill.

The seven, including a school principal, are accused of shooting to death plantation manager Bruno Michiels.
