Godsdienstvrijheid heeft absoluut grenzen. Als ik morgen een godsdienst start die als centraal thema heeft alle Joden uit te roeien, is het de vraag hoeveel vrijheid ik daarbij mag krijgen.

Het zou niet terecht zijn stelling tegen de Islam te nemen. Er zijn vele interpretaties mogelijk, zoals bij alle godsdiensten.

Wie echter in een Westers land komt wonen - dat die rechten wel erkent op zijn grondgebied - heeft zich daar logischerwijze aan te houden.

Enfin ja. Dat het absoluut géén kwestie van interpretatie zou zijn.

Zie. Je hebt altijd al gezegd dat je je fulmineerd tegen de ideologie. Voor een deel begrijpelijk. De Koran is geen kinderverhaaltje. (Enfin ja, dat gedeelte over het 9-jarig meisje...Enfin, soit.)

Maar wat zou het onmogelijk zijn om zaken anders te interpreteren? Ik denk maar aan - bijvoorbeeld - de koran situeren in zijn tijd. En het derhalve niet als het uiteindelijke, enige, absolute, eeuwiggeldende, in elke tijdpassende woord van God erkennen. Geloof het of niet; maar er zijn moslims die dat effectief doen.

Marx wordt ook opnieuw geïnterpreteerd. Met de Koran is dat niet anders. Sommigen nemen het ene wat letterlijker dan het andere.

Sebiet ga je btw ook nog ontkennen dat bepaalde passages van de koran wél oproepen tot vreedzaam gedrag. Om maar te zwijgen wat 'islam' concreet betekent.

En dan altijd dat eeuwige 'vrouwen zijn minder dan mannen'. Vrouwen zijn anders dan mannen. In hun leer. Ik ga dat niet verdedigen. Ik vind het bollocks. Maar zeggen dat ze per definitie 'minder' zijn is gewoonweg onwaar.

De Koran is een tekst uit de zevende eeuw die betwistbare passussen bevat, maar bij een welwillende lectuur stelt men toch vast dat barmhartigheid er de centrale deugd is. Iedere soera begint met de woorden bismillahi rahmani rahim 'in naam van God, de barmhartige, de erbarmende' en ook in de tekst lezen we telkens weer: God is barmhartig. Sommige moslims beseffen dit blijkbaar niet, maar als barmhartigheid Gods wezenskenmerk is, dan heeft de mens als basisopgave hem daarin na te volgen.

Vermeersch is iemand die de nodige studie van de Koran en de Islam heeft verricht. Niet dat iemand de wijsheid in pacht kan hebben, maar zelfs hij stelt dat er meerdere interpretaties van de Koran mogelijk zijn.

Vermeersch is iemand die de nodige studie van de Koran en de Islam heeft verricht. Niet dat iemand de wijsheid in pacht kan hebben, maar zelfs hij stelt dat er meerdere interpretaties van de Koran mogelijk zijn.

"Bij een welwillende lectuur", zegt Prof. Vermeersch.

En in de tekst lezen we dan inderdaad iets in de zin van "God is barmhartig", met daaronder: "dood de ongelovigen waar je hen vindt", of "ik zal terreur in hun harten zagen". Prof. Vermeersch weet duivels goed dat de aanhef niet zo barmhartig is als de tekst.

Maar misschien moet Prof. Vermeersch dan maar de mohammedaanse schriftgeleerden van zijn visie gaan overtuigen?
