He says you will not succeed in converting anyone... He and most people here can see right through it.

It's the same way in which Christian priests went to the outside world to massively convert ''ignorant people'' a few ages ago. Saying you will have a better life, that you have to stick to the ''right'' rules or else... face Allah's wrath. But in these times only people that lead difficult lifes can be converted, they are vulnerable. Normal people try to rationalize everything and immediately get what you're trying to do.
