Syria's only railway passenger connection from Tartus is linked to the port of Latakia further north. However, the national railway operator, Chimins de Fer Syriens, also operates military transport routes from Tartus to major cities across Syria.

How does Tartus serve Russia's strategic and geopolitical interests? Even a semipermanent base at Tartus allows the Russian Navy to expand its presence in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Russia's largest and most important military base in a foreign country is the Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol, Ukraine.

To deploy beyond the Black Sea, Russian warships based at Sevastopol must pass through the Bosporus Strait, which has been militarized by NATO-member Turkey.

Under the 1936 Montreux Convention, the Bosporus was deemed an international shipping lane with military restrictions. Under a 1982 amendment, Turkey now retains the right to close the Strait at its discretion in peacetime as well as during wartime.

As Russia's only Mediterranean base, that makes Tartus a vital strategic asset beyond the Bosporus. As a deep water port, it can dock nuclear submarines. Moscow is reportedly planning to expand the facilities so it can accommodate the Russian Navy's flagship -- the "Admiral Kuznetsov" aircraft carrier -- after 2012.

Tartus also strengthens Russia's great-power aspirations and increases its influence in regional diplomacy.

Could Russia's use of Tartus be affected by the ouster of Assad's regime? Analysts agree that Russian vetoes of UN Security Council resolutions against Assad's crackdown on dissent, as well as Russian weapons sales to the regime, make it likely that an opposition government replacing Assad would try to strip away Russia's rights to use Tartus.

17 maart 2011 - Iran and Syria has just signed an agreement that will allow the Iranians to supplement and enlarge the port facilities at Latakia and allow permanent Iranian warships to be based there. This could never have occurred had Egypt refused to allow the Iranian warships to transit the Suez Canal last month, first time since 1979. Obviously, either Egypt is silently with Iran or oblivious to their deception.

The base will include a large Iranian Revolutionary Guards weapons depot stocked with hardware chosen by the IRGC subject to prior notification to Damascus. Latakia harbor will be deepened, widened and provided with new "coastal installations" to accommodate the large warships and submarines destined to use these facilities. In Lebanon, Hamas, on Feb. 24th, fired several rockets into Israel, as if to "celebrate" the treaty. Iran will have a naval base 287 km from Israel. It is also 72 km from the permanent naval base Russia is building at the Syrian port of Tartous.

Children Massacred in a Mosque in Qaterji, Aleppo

Yesterday Assad committed yet another massacre against Aleppo’s residents, this time in the city’s Qaterji neighborhood. In the late afternoon, a missile struck the Muhammad al-Baqir Mosque and destroyed several other residential buildings as well. There have been reports that it was a SCUD missile, but residents [videos below] said one or two missiles were fired from a plane which is more likely. Ten martyrs have been counted so far with the number of wounded being much higher. Many children are among them, as residents [videos below] said they were attending Qur’an lessons inside the Mosque when the missile hit.

I’ve tried to collect all of the available videos about this horrific massacre. The first is the longest: it is a 12 minute recording of the aftermath, showing the chaos as everyone is trying to do something to help the victims. A number of people, among them children, are being pulled out from underneath the rubble. Some of them did not make it.

Pakistani Taliban sent hundreds to Syria to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with rebels

Yesterday, Taliban commanders in Pakistan said they had also decided to join the cause, and had sent hundreds of fighters to Syria to fight alongside their "mujaheddin friends".

“Since our Arab brothers have come here for our support, we are bound to help them in their respective countries and that is what we did in Syria,” he added.

Volgens de bron, waarover enkel vermeld wordt dat hij afkomstig is uit de Golf-regio, levert Saoedi-Arabië op kleine schaal luchtafweerraketten aan de rebellen. Die wapens zouden voornamelijk afkomstig zijn van Franse en Belgische leveranciers, luidt het nog. Frankrijk zou de transportkosten op zich hebben genomen.

Pro-Assad militia kills Syrian reconciliation team in Homs

Gunmen loyal to President Bashar al-Assad shot dead at least six mediators sent to try to reconcile warring sectarian groups in the province of Homs, where people on opposing sides in Syria's war had until now been able to coexist, residents said on Tuesday.

The negotiators were from the National Reconciliation Committee, which the government set up to foster talks in a two-year conflict that has taken more than 100,000 lives.

The killings, which happened on Monday evening in the village of Hajar al-Abyad, highlight the growing challenge of mediating between towns held by rebel groups and those controlled by pro-Assad militias known as "shabbiha".
