Rebels ready to retake strategic town from Hezbollah

Syrian rebels are poised to avenge their defeat at the hands of Hezbollah and lay siege to the strategic town of Qusayr, which was seized by the Lebanese Shia militia two months ago.

The Free Syrian Army said that the fighters expelled from Qusayr after a 17-day battle have regrouped. Their arsenal has been boosted by ammunition captured when they overran a Syrian army base two weeks ago.

Assad exempts reservists from loan payments to aid morale

Assad's forces are stretched thin across the country as the opposition has taken further ground. Fleeing reservists say morale is low among troops and that men are virtually imprisoned in their barracks by officers who fear they will defect or flee.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) says the Syrian army's strength has been cut roughly in half to around 110,000 men due to a combination of defections, desertions and battlefield losses.

“There are members from outside Syria, like Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Turkey [in ISIS] but their morals are better from those who are [Syrian]: the way they treat people, their courage, and the religious lessons they give at the centers and mosques.”

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah renewed his commitment on Friday to the battle in Syria, where the Shi'ite militant group has been fighting alongside President Bashar Assad's forces, saying he was ready to go himself if needed.

Nasrallah said Thursday's car bomb in Beirut would only reinforce Hezbollah's determination to fight in Syria and defeat radical Sunni Islamists he said were behind the attack. "If the battle requires me to go (to Syria) ... I will go," he said.

Nasrallah also said that radical Sunni Islamists were likely to have been responsible for the car bomb, which killed 24 people.
