"The National Coalition and the proposed government under [recently chosen] Ahmad Tomeh does not represent us, nor do we recognise it," 13 of Syria's most powerful rebel groups said in a joint statement late on Tuesday.

The groups include members of the main rebel Free Syrian Army, as well as Liwa al-Tawhid, the main rebel force in the northern province of Aleppo, and Jabhat al-Nusra

In their statement, they also called for Islamic law to be applied.

"These forces call on all military and civilian groups to unite in a clear Islamic context that... is based on sharia [Islamic] law, making it the sole source of legislation," it said.

Nearly a dozen of Syria's powerful rebel factions, including one linked to al-Qaeda, formally broke with the main opposition group in exile Wednesday and called for Islamic law in the country, dealing a severe blow to the Western-backed coalition.

"If the groups involved stand by this statement, I think this could be a very big deal — especially if it develops into a more-structured alliance instead of just a joint position,"

2 Free Syrian Army brigades join Al Nusrah Front

Two brigades of the Free Syrian army that operate in Raqqah province have joined the Al Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant, one of two official al Qaeda affiliates in Syria.

The Raqqah Revolutionaries Brigade and the God’s Victory Brigade have pledged loyalty to the Al Nusrah Front over the past several days, Reuters reported.

The Raqqah Revolutionaries Brigade is said to have more than 750 fighters in its ranks. The size of the God’s Victory Brigade, which announced its merger with the Al Nusrah Front, but it is said to have “15 battalions.” Battalions often have anywhere from dozens to hundreds of fighters.

Weg met het FSA, tijd voor de islamitische alliantie!

Is this a big deal? Yes. It represents the rebellion of a large part of the “mainstream FSA” against its purported political leadership, and openly aligns these factions with more hardline Islamist forces.

That means that all of these groups now formally state that they do not recognize the opposition leadership that has been molded and promoted by the USA, Turkey, France, Great Britain, other EU countries, Qatar, and – especially, as of late – Saudi Arabia.

That they also formally commit themselves to sharia as the “sole source of legislation” is not as a big a deal as it may seem.

Is this a one-off thing?

The fellow from the Tawhid Brigade informed me that more statements are in the making. According to him, this is not just an ad hoc formation set up to make a single point about the National Coalition. He hinted that it’s the beginning of a more structured group, but when I asked, he said it has no name yet. On the other hand, Abdulqader Saleh – Tawhid’s powerful military chief – referred to it on Twitter as al-Tahaluf al-Islami or the Islamic Alliance, but that may have been just descriptive, rather than a formal name.

Mohammed Alloush also wrote on Twitter, somewhat ambiguously, that the member groups have their own offices and political bureaus, and there’s a political program different from the National Coalition. He, too, hinted that there’s more coming: “wait for the announcement of the new army”.

MOSCOW, September 26 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with a US newspaper published Thursday that homemade sarin nerve agent was used in a chemical weapons attack in Damascus on August 21, an attack that the United States maintains was carried out by the Syrian regime.

Lavrov gave an interview to The Washington Post on Tuesday after a meeting with his US counterpart John Kerry. Lavrov said he had used the meeting to hand over evidence proving Russia’s contention that chemical weapons were used by Syrian rebel groups in the controversial August 21 attack.

Russia investigated the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Syrian city of Aleppo on March 19 after a request from the Syrian government, Lavrov said, adding that its findings have been “broadly” made available to the United Nations Security Council and the public, The Washington Post reported.

“The main conclusion is that the type of sarin used in that incident [on March 19] was homemade, and we also have evidence that the type of sarin used on August 21 was the same, only of higher concentration,” Lavrov said, according to The Washington Post.

The United States, as well as Britain and France, said last week that a UN report into the use of chemical weapons on August 21 in Damascus confirmed their contentions that it was the work of the Syrian regime, Reuters reported.

The UN investigation – which did not have a mandate to determine which side was responsible – said that sarin gas was delivered via surface-to-surface rockets during the attack on August 21, which also coincide with meteorological conditions that maximized the spread of the gas, according to Reuters.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on September 18 that the UN investigation was carried out in the absence of a full understanding of the situation in Syria, and described its conclusions as “politicized, biased and unilateral.”

Lavrov told The Washington Post on Tuesday that the evidence he had presented to Kerry to support Russia’s case that chemical weapons were used by rebel groups on August 21 was “available on the Internet,” and that it included reports from journalists who were told by combatants that “they were given some unusual rockets and ammunition by some foreign country and they didn’t know how to use them.”

We zouden ook bijna vergeten dat de VS al lang,geen echte,goedgekeurde begroting meer heeft........Ik bedoel maar....oorlogvoeren lijkt me niet echt een prioriteit omdat er eerst een risico ontstaat dat massaal veel Amerikaanse militairen (zoals al het ander overheidspersoneel) naar huis gestuurd moeten worden tot er weer geld is om hen te betalen.....

Er worden hieromtrent geen mededelingen gedaan(begrijpelijk) maar het zou ons absoluut niet mogen verwonderen dat de Amerikaanse strijdkrachten al lang bezig zijn om "middelen stil te leggen" (scjhepen,tanks,vliegtuigen....)om te vermijden dat alle operaties onmiddelijk moeten stoppen als eventueel de bijl valt....

Stratfor - The Caucasus Emirate (CE) Goes Global

For a decade almost all observers ignored, downplayed, and obfuscated an ugly truth about 'separatists' in Chechnya and the North Caucasus: they have long been a jihadist organization allied with Al Qa`ida (AQ), its affiliates, and the larger global jihadi revolutionary alliance AQ inspired. The ‘jihadization’ of the Chechen and Caucasus mujahedin began in the mid-1990s and culminated in October 2007 with the formation of the 'Caucasus Emirate' (CE) in place of the radically nationalist 'Chechen Republic of Ichkeriya' and the CE's declaration of jihad against not just Russia but the U.S., Britain, Israel and "any country fighting Muslims anywhere around the world," as CE amir Dokku Umarov warned.

The CE follows and propagandizes the same radical Salafi jihadist theo-ideology professed by AQ and its affiliates without becoming one of them. CE websites began to contain the very same propaganda and training materials found on AQ and its affiliates’ websites. This year, Umarov included the U.S. among the “unclean ones” who need to be swept from the earth.

In short, the CE has become a member of the global jihadi revolutionary alliance inspired by AQ. The global jihadi alliance is really AQ 2.0, expanded to include official affiliates and unofficial allies knitted together by the Internet not by visiting AQ amirs dispatched to places like Russia's North Caucasus as in the mid-1990s to mid-2000s. The Internet weaves the alliance together in a global network sharing theo-ideology, propaganda, financing, training, strategy, and tactics.

Now a new trend is being overlooked. The CE is becoming 'de-territorialized' and global, following the path of other originally localized AQ-like jihadist groups. The CE is now advancing from jihadization to globalization, bringing its ability to level sginificant violence not just beyond the Caucasus inside Russia but beyond Russia's borders. In September 2009, the global jihad’s leading philosopher, Abu Muhammad Asem al-Maqdisi praised the CE as a key jihadi organization and urged other groups and Muslims to support it because it could function as the global jihad’s “bridgehead into eastern Europe.” In November 2010, a ‘Shariah4Belgium’ cell and terrorist plot was uncovered in Belgium and a series of other countries. It included Chechens (and possibly other North Caucasians) as well as Moroccan immigrants in Belgium, Germany, and elsewhere in Europe, who were planning to attack NATO targets in Belgium and supplying the CE with finances and recruits. ‘Shariah4Belgium’ and the CE used a website jointly founded by CE affiliate, the ‘United Vilaiyat of Kabardiya, Balkariya and Karachai’ (UVKBK), based in Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Kabardino-Balkariya and an AQ-affiliated website founded by Anwar al-Awlaki.

The CE’s globalization is also evident in the Syrian civil war, as several CE-tied groups have joined the jihadists fighting for the Syrian rebels against the Bashar Assad regime. A Chechen jamaat of some 40 fighters under amir Abu Omar al-Shishani (al-Chechen) is fighting in Aleppo. Another combat jamaat from the CE’s UVKBK, the ‘Katibatu mukhadzhirin’ Jamaat, is fighting in Sham. Even an ethnic Tatar group, the ‘Bulgar Jamaat’, has reportedly left Waziristan to fight in Syria while deciding whether or not to return to Tatarstan and help extend the CE’s reach to Russia’s Volga and Urals areas.

The CE is a serious emerging global threat. By the five-year anniversary of its founding, the CE had carried out or participated in more than 2,200 attacks and violent incidents that had killed approximately 1,800 and wounded 2,600 police, military and civilian officials and servicemen and killed more than 450 and wounded 1,200 civilians. This record includes 46 suicide bombings – jihadism’s signature tactic – since November 2008. Recent CE successes include the suicide-bomb assassination of Dagestan’s leading Muslim Sufi sheikh, the assassination of Tatarstan’s deputy chief mufti, and the wounding of its chief mufti.

Western governments (not to mention journalists and academics), including the U.S., woke up late to the jihadization of the CE. Let us hope this is not so with regard to its globalization or the central role of the global jihadi alliance in the global Islamic revolutionary winter. Speaking of winter: The 2014 Winter Olympic Games – a global event if there ever was one – will be held in Russia’s resort city of Sochi, Krasnodar, the operational purview of the CE’s UVKBK. The CE’s DV has promised to attack the Games, and the UVKBK appeared to carry out a not so dry run in February 2011 attacking a major winter ski resort in a Mumbai-style multi-pronged attack.

The West must not let idealism overshadow interests. Everyone would like a democratic as opposed to an authoritarian Russia. Regardless of Moscow’s shortcomings, Western governments should be cooperating fully with their Russian counterparts against the CE to prevent jihadi terrorism in Russia and elsewhere before, during and after the Games.

26 september 2013 - Fox News is reporting a stunning theft of U.S. arms by jihadist salafists in Libya. This news item will be made much of by critics of Obama on the right. However, military and government blunders, cost overruns, unneeded weapons systems, and general mis-management are par for the course. Of more relevance is the light this sheds on the U.S. arms being shipped into Syria. There have already been detailed press reports that there really are no significant controls that prevent these arms from reaching the most terror-prone and jihadist elements among the Syrian rebels, whose numbers are large in proportion to all the rebels. This decision to ship arms was foolhardy from the get-go, and now in light of the Libyan theft it looks even more ill-conceived.

Some diplomats, who asked to remain anonymous, say they are seeing the kinds of conditions that opened the door to the Sept. 11 Benghazi attack now appearing in Tripoli and across the rest of Libya. They worry that American convoys and western convoys will be attacked using these stolen weapons and vehicles.

"The European ambassador was attacked and we are now commonly seeing robbing and attacking of people in broad daylight. ... This isn't perception, this is actually happening," said one source. The source was referring to an August incident where an escort vehicle for the European Union ambassador was attacked in Tripoli.

To make matters worse, the U.S.-developed training camp on the outskirts of Tripoli has now been taken over by one of these militia groups who are hoarding weapons, sources said. The worry is this camp, abandoned by U.S. trainers within the last month, is being used in preparation for an attack on the new Libyan government.

Meanwhile, special operators told Fox News that training camps throughout eastern Libya continue to train terrorists, and border controls right now around the country are non-existent in most areas.

"The theft of these weapons and the open borders are feeding Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood and threatens Libya's neighbors as well. It's already bad. ... and now it's really bad."
