Standaard Wat zeggen de Palestijnse christenen?

Citaat:
"The Christians in the west, most of them, they don't know the realities here. They don't know who is occupying who, who is oppressing who, who is confiscating whose land, who is building walls to try and separate people from one another," Alex Awad, who also pastors East Jerusalem Church, told The Christian Post.
Citaat:
"The Palestinian Christians in Gaza today, they suffer as much as the Palestinian Muslims in Gaza. They are under bombardment. They have only eight hours of electricity of every 24 hours. They have a hard time getting fresh water," he said. "The Palestinian Christians, they don't live in an isolated area where oh, this is a Christian town. No, they live among the Muslims in Gaza and therefore as much as the Muslims are suffering, the Christians are suffering, not only in the Gaza strip but also in the West Bank."
Citaat:
"The Christians in the West bank and the Gaza strip are not part of the fighting. We are not fighting on the side of Hamas. We are not fighting on the side of Israel. Most Christians are very, very neutral. We know in our hearts, we side with our Palestinian brothers and sisters, even the Muslims, because we know they are the ones under occupation, they are the ones who are under oppression, and we see that because it is very obvious for people who live here who is actually violating the other human rights," said Awad.
Citaat:
Issa Tarazi, the executive director of the Near East Council of Churches, recently told the National Catholic Register that the airstrikes on Gaza "are affecting all Christians and Muslims; Christians suffer the same as all the other people of Gaza, the same threats and the same stress.
Citaat:
Palestinian Christians, some of whom like Awad live in Israel, have been in the middle of the violence since it started earlier this month.

Maar wat zeggen de Christenen nu écht over de 'operatie' van Israël in Gaza?

Lees deze bijzonder krachtige oproep van de christelijke gemeenschap in Palestina:

Citaat:
As the death toll in Gaza grows - at least 18 children and more than 50 men and women have been killed in Israeli air attacks, the National Coalition of Christian Organizations in Palestine has sent us this desperate appeal. They write:

Justice and security are two sides of the same coin. Israel’s security can never be an excuse for denying justice to the Palestinian people.

In the spirit of the living God who sanctifies all life and in keeping with our faith and its teachings, we appeal to all people across the world to work with their fellow citizens and governments to end Israel’s Operation Protective Edge and the brutal military siege that has been going on for the past seven years, which includes a naval and economic blockade. Gaza has no port or airpor, thus no way to import or export its products.

This is not an escalation or a war. Gaza has no military or ability to protect itself other than to fire some homemade rockets. The 1.7 million people, mostly children (two thirds of the population) are also mostly refugees (1.1 million) from areas of 1948 and 1967.

Furthermore under the Fourth Geneva Convention, Palestinians, as a militarily occupied people, have the right to defend themselves.

Our justice loving God demands us to speak out on behalf of the security for all people. In the name of the Advocate Spirit, we ask you to speak out now to call a halt to this long term offensive operation which aims to wipe out a legally elected government and its people.

Whether you think the new unity government is viable or not, or if Hamas is a terrorist organization or not, or whether you think they might have been behind the death of the three Israeli teens murdered near Hebron, it is against international law to collectively punish or target them. It is not only inhumane. It is a war crime.

As of July 10, the date of this Appeal, Israeli military struck 430 targets across the Gaza Strip. 77 people have been reported dead and more than 500 wounded.. The majority of the dead are civilians. 18 are children including a baby one month old.

We pray for the memory of those killed. Each of them has a name and a family who is suffering great loss. We also pray for all those wounded or injured in body, mind, or spirit. We pray for solace and comfort also for the families whose homes, businesses, agricultural fields, or fishing boats that have also been destroyed. We pray for the people of Gaza and ask that God be with them.

Support Palestinian’s right to life by joining with Christians throughout the world in their call for a just peace in this land that all call holy. We have been down this road one too many times and know what will happen if we fail to act. Please join us through letters and petitions to your government officials to raise awareness about this offensive military operation and Gaza’s ongoing siege. Ask them to pressure Israel to stop its brutal assault or face sanctions from the international community.

Support Palestinian’s right to life by joining with Christians throughout the world in their call for a just peace in this land that all call holy.

Farid Jubran is an Arab Christian lawyer and a citizen of the State of Israel

Citaat:
There are some 140,000 Christians in Israel, 1.7% of the population. A minority of a minority, exposed to waves of hatred. How can anyone forget the image of Knesset Member Michael Ben-Ari ripping the pages of the New Testament at the Knesset and throwing them into the garbage while uttering harsh words of incitement?

Jews in Israel fire gunshots inside churches and set fire to monasteries, spray-paint malicious graffiti and slash the tires of Christians' cars. In the Old City of Jerusalem, religious Jews spit on monks, and in Christian cemeteries gravestones are shattered. Death threats are sent to bishops and heads of Christian communities.

Dozens of hate crimes – and the authorities stand idly by, apart from a few words of condemnation to do the minimum.

The state itself restricts the churches' activity immensely by imposing a strict and discriminating regime of visas for Christian clerics. A priest who wishes to stay in Israel in order to serve in one of the Christian communities will be forced to undergo a humiliating via dolorosa on the part of the authorities until he receives the stay permit, if at all.

Many Christian clerics have been residing in Israel for several decades and are still restricted to a visa which does not grant them any social rights, despite their years-long service for the community in churches, schools, hospitals, senior citizens' homes, etc.

Citaat:
Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church in Palestine, Archbishop of Sebastia (Theodosius) Attallah Hanna, called on the world community to fully recognize all legitimate Palestinian rights of liberation and independence.

Archbishop Hanna said what is happening in Jerusalem, the deadly escalation in the city, stems from Israel’s ongoing injustice, and violations, against the Palestinian people, their property and their holy site.

Talking to the Greek Orthodox Radio in Athens, on Saturday morning, Hanna said the Palestinian people are intellectuals, a civilized nation that wants to live in peace, and to end the injustice inflicted on them by the occupation, Israel’s illegal policies, and constant violations.

He said that people and counties around the world, and every person who defends human rights and works for justice, must deliver the message of the Palestinians, facing ongoing injustice, and must help the Palestinians end this illegal occupation and oppression.

“As a Greek orthodox priest, I must call for justice; I must side with the persecuted people,” Hanna said, “We should defend the Palestinian cause, we should work for peace, justice and liberty.”

He added that he rejects all sorts of extremism, violence and hatred, affirmed that ending the occupation, and regaining the stolen rights, “will bring justice and peace to the holy land.”

We as Palestinian Christians are living in our homeland; we are part of the Palestinian nation,” Hanna said, “We will never abandon our rights, and the right to defend our cause along with every Palestinian.”

He said that all European countries, every country around the world, must have the courage to recognize all legitimate Palestinian rights, so that the Palestinian can live in peace and liberty in their homeland.

Hanna further called on all Orthodox Churches, Catholic Churches, and every church around the world to defend the Palestinian rights, and to help them gain their freedom.

“Christians in Jerusalem suffer the same way Muslims do,” he stated, “We are one nation, enduring the same suffering, and fate.”

He also called for ending the destruction of Syria, the aggression that is targeting the country and its people, and called for more extensive efforts to release every kidnapped person, including the two abducted priests.

In addition, Hanna said Iraq, a country with deep historical roots, culture and civilization, is still suffering, and continues to suffer more death and destruction.

Kardinaal Vincent Nichols bezoekt de christenen in Gaza:

Citaat:
Cardinal says innocent citizens are caught in a 'vice of conflicting ideologies'

Cardinal Vincent Nichols has said he is “deeply shocked” after visiting areas of Gaza devastated by the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The Archbishop of Westminster toured neighbourhoods flattened by shelling and air strikes as well as visiting a hospital and an orphanage.

Cardinal Nichols told the Guardian newspaper: “I was deeply shocked at the effects of war and endemic poverty.

“Pope Francis has said there must be an end to war, and when you see the effect in a place like Gaza it reinforces that.”

During his visit Cardinal Nichols celebrated a Mass for Gaza’s Catholics and visited Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust memorial. The cardinal travelled to the Holy Land with 100 pilgrims who visited Bethlehem, while he went to Gaza.

The cardinal described Gaza as “a deeply depressing situation in a devastated region where people are trapped”.

He said there was little sign of rubble being cleared in the area. “It’s astonishing the number of people with the appearance of nothing to do – people just sitting on the streets. There is only the barest sense of order. This is not an economy that is going to be able to support its population.”

The cardinal added that he was worried about “the innocent citizens of Gaza caught in a vice of conflicting ideologies – an almost impossible situation for them”.

Cardinal Nichols has visited Palestinian Christians several times before. After a visit two years ago he wrote to William Hague, then Foreign Secretary, expressing concern about Israel’s security barrier and its effect on people’s lives.

At a Christmas Eve homily he prayed for “over 50 families [who] face losing their land and their homes” thanks to the barrier.

Citaat:
Gaza City, 1 Safar 1436/24 November 2014 (MINA) – Gaza is home to almost 2000 Palestinian Christians. Christians in Palestine are permitted to obtain any job, in addition to having their full rights and duties as their Muslim counterparts in accordance with the Palestinian Declaration of Independence. Moreover, seats have been allocated to Christian citizens in the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in accordance with a quota system that allocates based on a significant Christian presence.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the leader of Catholics in England and Wales, visited Gaza today, during his trip to the region, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting, Monday.

The Cardinal lead over 100 pilgrims from the Diocese of Westminister to Gaza to celebrate a Mass for the strips Catholic community, before going to visit the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem.

In an interview with MEMO today, Cardinal Nichols said “Everyone should rediscover the humanity of the situation, beyond the politics, beyond the oppression of war. We have to get a fresh focus, that it is a human community here in Gaza, and we have to look at ways that the community can prosper – because poverty is always a cause of frustration, and frustration is always a cause of dispute”.

The Cardinal agrees with the fears of others that the actions of an extreme few, on both sides, might set the agenda in the Holy Land, and thus strong leadership is required on both sides to lead to peace. He strongly believes that both sides must abide by international law, and referred to the Israeli settlement programme as being contrary to international law.

Churches in Gaza are renowned for the relief and educational services that they offer, and Muslim citizens participate in these services. Palestinian citizens as a whole benefit from these services. (T/P3/R01)

Een tijdje geleden al:

Ted Cruz wordt uitgejouwd op een conferentie over de christenen in het Midden-Oosten, naar aanleiding van uitspraken over Israël

Citaat:
Washington — Why was Ted Cruz booed off the stage while speaking at an event meant to raise awareness of the persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East?

Because he mentioned Israel, that’s why.

Here’s the background: On Wednesday night, the Texas GOP senator gave a keynote address at a gala sponsored by a group named In Defense of Christians. The organization’s objective is to focus public attention on the plight of persecuted Middle East Christian groups.

Near the end of his speech, Senator Cruz said, “Christians have no greater ally than Israel.” At this point, some in the audience started to boo, according to eyewietness accounts and video of the incident.

Cruz continued with, “Those who hate Israel hate America. Those who hate Jews hate Christians.” At that point, the boos got louder and things began to get out of hand.

Eventually, Cruz decided he could not continue. He said, “If you will not stand with Israel and the Jews, then I will not stand with you. Thank you and God bless you.” He walked offstage to a decidedly mixed response.

Citaat:
Jerusalem, Israel, Feb 18, 2015 / 03:35 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Palestinian Christians, a monastery, a convent and a Catholic school near Bethlehem are all at risk from the Israeli government’s planned security barrier in the West Bank’s Cremisan Valley, the U.S. bishops have told members of Congress.

“The proposed routes of the separation barrier would effectively confiscate the Palestinian agricultural and recreational lands of over 50 Christian families. This threatens the livelihoods of the remaining Christian community of Bethlehem, pressuring even more to leave the Holy Land,” Bishop Oscar Cantu of Las Cruces told leaders of Congress in a Feb. 11 letter on behalf of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on International Justice and Peace.

The Cremisan Valley is near Beit Jala, Beit Sahour, and Bethlehem, in the West Bank territory of Palestine.

Bishop Cantu, who visited the valley in January, said the barrier would have “devastating consequences” for the local community.

“The situation in the Cremisan Valley is a microcosm of a protracted pattern that seriously jeopardizes the Israeli-Palestinian peace process,” he added.

The bishop asked leaders of the Senate and House committees on foreign relations and foreign affairs to intervene with the Israeli government to stop the barrier.

If the barrier is constructed as planned, it would cut off a Salesian monastery from a nearby convent and isolate their ministries from “critical resources and contacts with the local population,” Bishop Cantu said.

“In one case, the proposed route would surround a Salesian school for 450 students on three sides with a militarized barrier,” the bishop warned.

He cited a December 2014 statement from the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land which said the wall “alienates the most basic rights and freedom of the Christian community of Beit Jala.”

The assembly warned that the barrier’s construction would result in continued emigration for the mostly Christian community in the Cremisan Valley.

Among the Palestinian population, more than 12 percent were Christian in 2000; emigration has reduced that figure to less than two percent.

Bishop Cantu reaffirmed the U.S. bishops’ long support for “a secure and recognized Israel living in peace alongside a viable and independent Palestinian state.”

He said the Israeli barrier’s further constriction of more West Bank communities lessens the possibility of a future resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and puts “both Palestinians and Israeli citizens at risk.”
