Dit vraagt dus om uitleg. Maar ik weet niet of jij een Jane Austen lezer bent en enige affiniteit hebt met het analyseren van literaire werken...

Tyler Perry outdid himself with his latest drama with an all-star female cast. This kind of drama should be, as Aristotle declared, a catharsis. I’m not sure if it had this effect on me, but he might also mean that you feel less harassed and tortured by life if you notice that there is even more suffering possible. Yours is not the worse case scenario. That’s why there are these half naked homeless men around who eat out of garbage cans, just to remind us who eat daily meals from a plate, on a table, and sleep in a bed draped with clean sheets; are really not doing so bad. I was aware of the play by Ntozake Shange (1975) this movie has been based on, but the daunting title really kept me from wanting to read it. Now I wonder if the play is as good as the movie.
Suffering and anguish are by degree. This movie is a catalogue of all the things that can go wrong in any woman’s life. Barrenness, victimised by incest with their mother looking away, date rape, a violent and alcoholic partner who kills his two little children, a gay husband who infects his wife with the AIDS virus, a man who cannot choose between two women, unwanted pregnancy and abortion, unhealthy promiscuity, poverty in old age. We know about Medea, who killed the children to revenge herself on her unfaithful husband, the man who’s life she saved but who left her to marry another woman. This movie catalogues the terrible things men do to women. Yet I still feel that people let others do things to them, because they make poor choices. Usually because we do not like to acknowledge what is in front of us but instead keep dreaming away. Helped by lack of good education and TV. Jane Austen’s (1775-117) was an avid novel reader, what in her times was deplored in the same way we deplore television as the cause of unhappiness and all evil. So we need to find the cause and the solution within ourselves. Again all bad situations do not change for the worst outcome. Problems might be solved, or even solve themselves. However, for a movie things are always taken to the extreme.
But what’s the use: can we really prepare for life? I have always thought that all out marriages; the dress, the flowers, the music, the cake and food, are invented to bamboozle, hoodwink, out rightly deceive a young woman about what she is really getting herself into: to get chained to some strange man who will use her as a prostitute and a housemaid, she even has to wash his shitty underwear and soon take care of his ugly children too. This they learn as soon as the honeymoon is over, and a household has to be kept. But with the little wife moored at home, chained to the sink, and the young man out, at total leisure with his friend and carrying on his old, careless lifestyle. His own doting mommy was taking care of him and cooking him wholesome meals, so he could go out and do all these sport and grow in the Greek god that these deceived girls like so much. Every marriage is in fact a taken in because partners keep on their good behaviour, and good looks, and ideal weight; just until the moment the cage is locked.
But on the other hand it would not do to tell young people the horrors that might await them. I say might, because there definitely will always be hurt and suffering, but it does not have to end in homelessness, child murder or AIDS. The movie seems near perfect in its aims, the images are flawless yet realistic. A lot has been done to make the eight personalities, who are interconnected and interact, different from each other and the actresses outdo themselves in good acting. We have already greatly enjoyed them in other movies, and they are really playing the same role, doing what they do best, but in a different setting. The movie would not have worked if they were unknowns. I, for one, could never forget I was watching beautiful Janet Jackson, Michael’s little sister, discussing trust issues with her handsome, trophy husband; who is obsessed with illicit gay sex, and infects her with HIV. That’s one hell of a taken in and I can hear Mrs. Elton howling: ‘pitiful.’ Tandy Newton plays the promiscuous crazy bitch all horny men fear, with relish. Mostly filmed in close up, the women perform with little make up and show all possible Black types.
But the most satisfying parts are the monologues straight at the viewer, at the height of their individual conflicts that are poetical laments that explain it all. Although this speeds things along, it still is a long movie. I’m not sure it will do for the young as they have not tasted life yet, and they might not understand that all this ‘weirdness’ could just be their future. On the other hand they could be sat down and forced to view this movie at least three times, with a snap test sprung on them for good measure. But that would be cruel. So let the young be young and innocent, not be scared out of their wits for live and for love. This piece really makes me think things are for ordained, to me a soothing believe, and that we are controlled by fate. We suffer because the gods are waging war over our heads, using us as pawns. As the great philosopher Aristotle of the ancient Greeks had already decided.

Anne van Egmond in 1984Anne van Egmond (26 februari 1947) is een Nederlands programmamaakster en diskjockey en werkzaam bij RTV Noord-Holland.

Als 15-jarige begon ze bij de AVRO bij jeugdomroep 'Minjon'. In 1965 ging ze verder bij de KRO als co-presentator naast Theo Stokkink van het jongerenprogramma 'Sjook'. Daarna volgden programma's als onder andere 'P.M.', 'Vliegende Schijven' voor de militairen, 'Djinn', 'Interlokaal', 'Adres Onbekend', het verzoekplatenprogramma op Hilversum 3 'Je kunt me nog meer vertellen', 'Tombola' met Lex Lammen en Lex Tondeur, 'Van Oud Zeer tot Zeer Oud', 'Aan de Veilige Kant', 'De Vensterbank', 'Met Anne', 'Radio de Zwarte Roos' met Peter van Bruggen, en 'Het Egmond Complex'. Na haar periode bij de KRO is Van Egmond werkzaam geweest bij onder andere de AVRO, TROS, RVU, RT5 en Classic FM. Sinds 1997 heeft ze haar programma 'Egmond Binnen' op RTV Noord-Holland en sinds januari 2008 het programma 'Anne op Zaterdag' op dezelfde zender.

Naast haar radiowerk heeft Van Egmond zich ook beziggehouden met televisie. Tussen '65 en '67 was ze KRO tv-presentatrice. Verder zijn er nog wat tv-optredens geweest zoals 4 keer AVRO's Sterrenslag, 17 keer Zo Vader Zo Zoon, een paar keer AVRO's Babbelonië met Pim Jacobs en Jos Brink, en 1 seizoen in Rudi Carrells 1,2,3 show. Verder heeft ze meegedaan met Tien voor Taal, Henny Huismans Playback Show en de Soundmix Show.
