Toch een bizar verhaal, deze petitie.

In The Telegraph van 19/12/2004 staat dit:

As one young woman awaits sentence and another faces death this week, Alasdair Palmer reveals the Iranian legal system's shocking barbarity towards children

"My mother doesn't visit me in prison. If you see her, tell her she promised to bring me cheese curls and chocolate. And she shouldn't forget to bring my red dress."

Those pathetic words may be among the last utterances of a 19-year-old girl, identified only as Leila M, who has been condemned to death in Iran for "acts incompatible with chastity".

According to Amnesty International, Leila has a mental age of eight. What evidence there is of her life so far records an existence of unrelieved misery and brutality.

She was sold into prostitution at the age of eight by her parents. She recalls the experience of when her mother "first took me to a man's house" as "a horrible night. I cried a lot … but then my mum came the next day and took me home. She brought me chocolate and cheese curls."

Forced by beatings and threats to continue "visiting men" from that night onwards, she became pregnant and had twins when she was 14. She was punished with 100 lashes by the Iranian courts for giving birth to illegitimate children.

Leila was bullied back into her degrading and demeaning work. Earlier this year, she confessed to the authorities that she had been working as a prostitute since she was a child – perhaps because she thought that they might help her escape her miserable existence.

The courts did respond by pulling Leila out of prostitution, but they also imprisoned her and used her confession to convict her of "moral crimes", for which the judges have decided the appropriate penalty is death.

They dismissed evidence from doctors and social workers that she has a severe mental handicap. This week, Iran's Supreme Court, which by law must confirm every death sentence imposed by the lower courts, will rule on whether to uphold her execution.

Bovendien is dit verhaal anderhalf jaar oud. Wat is er intussen gebeurd? Werd ze terechtgesteld? Wat heeft "Iran's Supreme Court" "this week" (dus eind 2004!) beslist?
Ik vind daar niets van terug.

In de tekst van de petitie is ze ook nog 19, zoals in het artikel.

Nee ik weet niet hoe meisjes van 9 zwanger raken. Ofwel is het een biologisch hoogst uitzonderlijk feit ofwel via kunstmatige inseminatie ( dan nog betwijfel ik of een meisje van 9 de zwangerschap zou kunnen voldragen) ofwel schrijf je leugens in je verhaaltje.

dat meisje is gewoon vroegrijp. Komt wel meer voor in die landen.In Afrika trouwen meisjes geregeld op die leeftijd.Hier in onze streken zijn de meisjes een beetje later met hun menstruatie. Zo rond de 12 jaar. Dat zijn dan natuurlijk nog kinderen voor ons, maar strikt biologisch gezien kunnen die dan reeds kinderen ter wereld brengen. Bij ons vermijden we dat, het is zelfs strafbaar, en word het word door de wet beschouwd als verkrachting.In Iran is het verkrachte kind strafbaar, vandaar die petitie. Duidelijk genoeg voor u? Of hebt ge een tekeningske nodig? Een cartoon bvb.?

IRAN : Leyla Mafi, (f), aged about 20

Leyla Mafi is now known to have had her sentence of 99 lashes inflicted in February at the headquarters of the Justice Department in the city of Arak. Afterwards she was moved to a women’s rehabilitation centre in Tehran, where she is obliged to stay for eight months.

Her lawyer thanked all the activists inside and outside Iran who campaigned to save Leyla from the death penalty, and said that despite the trauma Leyla had been through, she was very glad to be alive.

Leyla Mafi was forced into prostitution by her mother when she was eight years and raped repeatedly thereafter. She was arrested in early 2004 and charged with "acts contrary to chastity" by controlling a brothel, having intercourse with blood relatives and giving birth to an illegitimate child. Tests carried out by social workers reportedly showed that she had a mental age of eight, but despite this she was sentenced to flogging followed by death.

In response to urgent appeals from human rights defenders inside Iran, from Amnesty International’s membership and Urgent Action network, and from foreign governments, the Iranian government took the exceptional step of publicly commenting on the case at a news conference on 26 December 2004. They contested Amnesty International’s information about the case, but nonetheless announced that Leyla Mafi’s case would be reviewed.

On 27 March 2005 the Supreme Court overturned the death sentence, but upheld the sentence of flogging. The case was sent back to the Court of First Instance in Arak for a retrial. In October 2004 Leyla Mafi was acquitted of the charge of incest (which carries the death penalty), and of controlling a brothel. However, she was convicted of an "unchaste act with a next of kin (other than fornication)" and was sentenced to 99 lashes. She was also sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment for "providing the facilities for corruption and prostitution by being available for sexual acts". The judge also ordered that following the completion of her prison sentence, she should reside for eight months in a women’s rehabilitation centre.

Met andere woorden : PollyCorrect laat ons op 15 mei een petitie tekenen tegen de doodstraf voor dat meisje, terwijl de Iranezen reeds op 27 maart hebben beslist om die niet uit te voeren.

Afijn, des te beter voor het meisje in kwestie.
