Iowa Results: Did the GOP establishment sabotage Ron Paul as it vowed to do?

UPDATE 10:48 PM CENTRAL: With 96% of precincts reporting, Rick Santorum narrowly leads Mitt Romney, both at 25% in Iowa. The candidates have wrestled back-and-forth as the final tallies are counted. Ron Paul at a close third with 21%, conceded the race calling himself ‘one of the three winners,’ while vowing to go on, continue raising funds and fighting for victory in what he termed a movement, rather than a campaign.

Santorum’s surprise last-minute surge coincides with announcements that the vote in Iowa would be counted at a secret location, and along with statements from top GOP officials strategizing how to effectively take out Ron Paul and diminish his significance. It is no secret that all the stops have been pulled to minimize Paul’s media visibility throughout the campaign trail, with many top GOP figures and media commentators going so far as to pre-script a plan to ignore Iowa in the event that Ron Paul won the caucuses, in order to prevent the Congressman from dominating the national stage.

Did the GOP establishment succeed in sabotaging the Ron Paul campaign as it vowed to do?

What accounts for Santorum’s swift rise to the top of polls in Iowa only days out from the contest when he barely showed a pulse in ANY state, let alone Iowa, among the crowded GOP field at any time in the weeks and months before?

The Des Moines Register poll from ONLY two days ago showed Santorum at 15%– a distance third that itself marked a spectacular improvement from a campaign that struggled to even stand out in the ‘second tier’ of GOP candidates. Both Paul and Romney consistently ranked in the top three polls for Iowa for some time.

Whatever the answer, for the so-called “mainstream” corporate-owned media who dominate news wires and cable television (but must now combat the rise of Internet journalism), it will be enough to justify ignoring Ron Paul and keeping him out of the headlines in hopes of sinking the entire campaign before it catches on at a truly national level.

Whatever, the show goes on...

Ron Paul may have officially come in third in tonight's Iowa caucuses, but if his organizational strategy went off as planned, it is possible that the Texas Congressman is actually the real winner of the state's Republican nominating contest.

Senior advisors for Paul's coalitions team told Business Insider this week that the campaign's organizational strategy was focused not only on getting as many votes as they can, but in making sure that their volunteers stuck around after the voting to make sure that they were nominated as delegates to the county's Republican convention — the first step towards being appointed as a delegate to the Republican National Convention.

That's because Iowa's Republican caucuses are actually non-binding — it's technically just a straw poll. The only thing that will get Paul's — or any other candidate's — Iowa supporters to Tampa next year is if they stuck around and volunteered, or were elected, as delegates.

Sydney Hay, a senior advisor, said Monday night indicated that she was confident Paul's supporters would blow opponents out of the water when it came to the important delegate vote, adding that she has spent the last few weeks criss-crossing the state to ensure Paul's voters knew exactly what to do when the caucuses rolled around.

Omdat het veld zo "onbevredigend" is, en de rechterzijde zo verdeeld, wendde de rechterzijde zich tot de ene na de andere kandidaat als de "anti-Romney". Bachman, Perry, Cain, Gingich, hadden allen hun 5 minuten onder de zon, piekten te vroeg en implodeerden... Santorum ("Latin for not-Romney") had het geluk dat hij juist zo weinig scoorde in de peilingen, waardoor hij grotendeels door de anderen werd genegeerd en dus geen negatieve aanvallen te verwerken kreeg. Nadat alle andere rechtse kandidaten implodeerden was het zijn beurt en hij piekte op het juiste moment (had de caucus een paar dagen later geweest had hij waarschijnlijk zelfs gewonnen). Nadeel voor Santorum is dat hij en zijn campagne een gebrek aan geld en organisatie hebben, zodat Romney bekampen toch heel moeilijk wordt. Het lijkt me dan ook dat Romney genomineerd zal worden tenzij meerdere kandidaten aan de rechterzijde stoppen en hun steun aan 1 enkele kandidaat betuigen... maar aangezien politiekers a la Bachmann egotrippers zijn zal dit waarschijnlijk niet gebeuren waardoor Romney via een pluraliteit zal winnen.
