Wie besmet raakt met het virus, geniet bovendien ook geen levenslange bescherming. We zien nu al vaak dat een oude infectie niet beschermt tegen een nieuwe variant. Als je het virus gewoon zijn gang laat gaan, zit je om de zoveel maanden met een uitbraakmogelijkheid in scholen en dat is uiteraard niet de bedoeling.

Niemand beweert dat een natuurlijke infectie levenslange immuniteit geeft, onze Pierre valt dus een stropop aan. Maar het is wel een wetenschappelijk feit dat een natuurlijke infectie een langdurige immuniteit geeft, en veel langer dan vaccinimmuniteit:

Conclusions

SARS-CoV-2 infection is highly protective against reinfection with the Delta variant. Immunity from prior infection lasts for at least 13 months. Countries facing vaccine shortages should consider delaying vaccinations for previously infected patients to increase access.

Effectiveness of previous infection against symptomatic infection with Delta was 88.2%, which was similar to the protection against symptomatic infection throughout the entire study period (92.0%). Even when asymptomatic cases were included, protection offered against reinfection with Delta and throughout the entire study period was 85.4% and 85.7%, respectively. After the first 5 months, protection against reinfection exceeded 90% for up to 13 months after primary infection, suggesting that natural immunity lasts longer than has been previously reported [5,7,8]. Effectiveness against repeat infection was slightly reduced in patients aged 65 years and older.

In fact, natural infection appears to offer more sustained protection against Delta than vaccine-mediated immunity. Recent studies have shown that vaccine-mediated immunity wanes after 6 months, with a rapid decline in efficacy against Delta after as little as 90 days [10,11,13,19]. This finding is further supported by a large observational study in Israel, which reported that SARS-CoV-2-naive individuals who received two doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer mRNA vaccine were 6 to 13 times more likely to become infected with Delta than patients who had experienced infection previously [20]. Similarly, we found that among vaccinated patients, those who were not previously infected were almost 8 times as likely to be subsequently infected with Delta.

• Hansen et al (2021):3 in a population-level observational study, people who had had COVID-19 previously were around 80·5% protected against reinfection
• Pilz et al (2021):4 in a retrospective observational study using national Austrian SARS-CoV-2 infection data, people who had had COVID-19 previously were around 91% protected against reinfection
• Sheehan et al (2021):5 in a retrospective cohort study in the USA, people who had had COVID-19 previously were 81·8% protected against reinfection
• Shrestha et al (2021):6 in a retrospective cohort study in the USA, people who had had COVID-19 previously were 100% protected against reinfection
• Gazit et al (2021):7 in a retrospective observational study in Israel, SARS-CoV-2-naive vaccinees had a 13·06-times increased risk for breakthrough infection with the delta (B.1.617.2) variant compared with those who had had COVID-19 previously; evidence of waning natural immunity was also shown
• Kojima et al (2021):8 in a retrospective observational cohort of laboratory staff routinely screened for SARS-CoV-2, people who had had COVID-19 previously were 100% protected against reinfection

Clinical studies

• Hall et al (2021):9 in a large, multicentre, prospective cohort study, having had COVID-19 previously was associated with an 84% decreased risk of infection
• Letizia et al (2021):10 in a prospective cohort of US Marines, seropositive young adults were 82% protected against reinfection

Although those studies show that protection from reinfection is strong and persists for more than 10 months of follow-up,3 it is unknown how long protective immunity will truly last.
