Decent respect for somebody else's most cherished beliefs, however silly
they may seem, is the duty of all truly sincere persons. Many in the last
two centuries have lampooned the religion and ethnicity of others. African
Americans, Jews, and sundry others have found themselves caricatured in a
manner that is personally offensive. Cartoons probably exist that depict
Moses, Jesus, or Buddha blasphemously. This is not decent behavior. There
are better ways of making the same point (i.e., that people use religion to
rationalize crime and terrorism).

On the other hand, acts of crime and terrorism, including death threats, are
not appropriate responses to such insults. I hope, before I die, to see the
Rule of Law restored on this planet. Justice under law will foster a spirit
of mutual respect.

The very survival of civilization is contingent upon such a development.
