Tesla its most impressive and longest demo of the Full Self-Driving suite, showing a zero-intervention trek from the San Francisco Bay Area to Los Angeles. The drive required no interventions from the vehicle operator, the video showed.

It also included a quick Supercharging stop about two-thirds of the way in.

Full Self-Driving is not fully autonomous, but it does operate under what Tesla calls “Supervised” conditions. This means that the driver does not have to have their hands on the wheel, nor do they have to control the accelerator or brake.

Instead, Tesla’s internal cabin-facing camera tracks eye movement to ensure the driver is ready to take over at any time and is paying attention.

The version of FSD used in this example is likely the version that the public has access to; the only differentiating factor would be the Hardware version, as older vehicles do not have HW4.

With Tesla’s Robotaxi suite in Austin operating since late June, the company stated that those vehicles are using a version that is not yet available to the public. It does not require anyone to be in the driver’s seat, which is how the vehicles are able to operate without anyone in the driver’s seat.

In Europa is men nog altijd bezig de ouderwetse wetgeving aan te passen.

En dat kan lang duren.

Voor deels autonoom rijden level 3 onder voorwaarden (tot 130 kmu op snelwegen) is er reeds een wet van 2022, en vanaf 1 januari 2023 toegelaten/ingevoerd in bepaalde landen, maar ook andere landen moeten hun wetgeving eerst aanpassen, of hebben het inmiddels aangepast.

Even though some countries such as France and the UK have now created legal regulations for the use of automated systems or have initiated corresponding legislative processes, there is still no internationally applicable legislation.

Since 2022, highly automated vehicles with autonomous driving functions can be authorised in the EU. However, the use of such vehicles in EU countries is initially restricted to routes requiring authorisation. Significant progress was made in 2023: Since January, a UN regulation has allowed cars in Level 3 use to travel at speeds of up to 130 km/h in certain traffic situations such as on motorways and when changing lanes.

Mercedes (drive pilot) had eerst een eigen limiet van 60 kmu opgelegd, maar ging reeds september 2024 overstag naar 95 kmu. BMW volgde met hun personal pilot L3, enkel in hun 7 serie, maar blijft voorlopig bij 60 kmu max.

Morgan Stanley’s analyst Adam Jonas shared a notable endorsement of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software after completing a 1,400-mile round trip from New York to Michigan in his Model Y.

Jonas reported that FSD handled more than 99% of the miles, calling the system “a game changer” for long-distance driving.

Hands-free experience

Jonas drove his 2021 Tesla Model Y equipped with Hardware 3 and FSD Supervised v12.6.4, and he used the system nearly the entire trip. “Having your hands off the wheel and feet off the pedals for nearly 12 hours of driving is a real game changer that is hard to appreciate without experiencing it for yourself,” he noted.

He explained that outside of two heavy downpours, one on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and another in suburban Detroit, plus some light maneuvering in fast food parking lots, FSD handled the drive without any human intervention. “FSD made no mistakes or close calls that I recall. The system handles highways very safely and confidently. I cannot imagine buying another EV without FSD.”

Broader implications

Jonas added that he has used FSD consistently over the past 18 months, and the $8,000 he paid for the feature feels like a bargain considering the value. He also praised Tesla’s Supercharging network, which supported his trip without issue.

Jonas has been one of Wall Street’s most closely followed voices on Tesla, and his comments add weight to the ongoing debate about the role of autonomy in the company’s future. His current price target for Tesla stock stands at $410. During Morgan Stanley’s 13th Annual Laguna Conference, he echoed similar experiences with Tesla’s software, emphasizing that FSD “probably drove well over 99% of the miles” on his recent trips.
